28 January 2013

my talk went pretty well, i mostly just elaborated on a few "how to begin teaching" points from preach my gospel & used the examples of nephi/laman&lemuel, alma the younger, & the sons of mosiah :) uhhh what jacob blew a tire??!? glad everyone was safe!! haha crazy, what happened??? br y  has a baptismal date for feb 16th but he still hasn't made it out to church... sick, then didn't have anything to wear, then sick again. :/ bummer dude. we're going out to see him on tuesday and see how things are going! but the "good news" i guess is because of his illness he can't drink hot drinks! haha so that makes quitting coffee easy? ;) elder bedar -- so so so so good!!!! i used some stuff from his talk as well :) ahhhhhh. so good. i just remember being BLOWN AWAY by that talk hahaha. go panthers!! crush 'em ;) wow, go lauren! and trevor!! hooray for missionaries!! we've got like 25 new missionaries this month and more are coming!!! Aaaaaahh!!!!!! and TRANSFERS are on feb 20th!!! i'm so nervous hahaha aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh. i love that you feel like we get to have a chat once a week! i feel that way too :) :) the fun bus is so crazy haha, it's just like a 12-seater van that we use to go to zone stuff so that we don't all drive our cars and use up our miles. i'll send you a picture of ammon with a sombrero haha. zone conference was milwaukee north & milwaukee south zones. there's also green bay zone, appleton zone, and madison zone :) i'm in milwaukee south. i'll send you the picture we took of the zone! see if you can spy me ;) haha not too hard (i hope! ;)) and i'll send you a picture from his baptism!!! so great hahaha, none of the jumpsuits fit him except for a (literally) XXXXXL one! so he looks kind of gangster hahahaha. we asked him how he was feeling before the baptism and he goes "i feeeeeeel goood!" (james brown style) hahahaha. he says, "i may be old, but i'm still funky!" hahahahahhaha.

i love that the Elder's Quorum is going out and getting people! we have such a great ward :) :) & way to go nathan, going out with the missionaries! yeah we get to go to the temple if we can get a member to take us and it's not more than 2 hours away and not more than once every 6 months. so sister casdorph and i are gonna try to go in february! cause i just can't get enough!! haha aaahhh. http://www.lds.org/broadcasts/archive/ces-devotionals/2013/01?lang=eng ta-da! CES devotionals. DEFINITELY read president uchtdorf's and tell me what you think!!!! i wish i could print it all out haha. speaking of which, i didn't get a paper letter last week... which is okay, just fyi. maybe it's delayed. :) i don't know where to find the mtc devotionals but definitely worth the hunt if you can find them!!!! so so so so SO good!! i LOVED the MTC, it's like missionary summer camp!! with apostles!! haha just SUCH a great place, i'm so excited for nathan and jacob and joseph and maryanne and julia to all go there :) :) yeah Sister H is great! and something that was cool - we invited her to read Mosiah 18 as her "homework" one night, and when we came back to talk about it she said different verses had stood out and we talked about why, and one that was interesting to me was she said that verse 28 stood out because it talked about "imparting of your substance of your own free will" and she took that to mean quitting her addictions of her own free will! like her substance abuse. which i thought was so interesting. that's not the "right" way to interpret that verse, but it was the right way for her! and the Spirit spoke to her and let her know what she needs to do :) haha YEAH the paper towel totally froze in my hand!! so so so so cold haha but it's warmer today. might even be above freezing out there haha ;) wow so exciting for the everett mission too!! i was thinking - all these new missionaries means a ton of new AREAS! so nathan & i will probably get to open new areas as part of our missions - which kind of scares me!! hahaha but it's part of the Lord hastening His work. so it's exciting! and scary! haha :) speaking of everett washington, can you ask the missionaries what their standards of excellence are, if they have them? i'm really curious :) :) i want to see Snohomish from a missionary pov! haha :)

the baptism went excellent, sister casdorph said it was the most spiritual baptism of her whole mission and elder kanahele said the interview was the most spiritual he'd ever had. so that was crazy haha. it was really really awesome :) oh thanks for the reminder! yes member lessons have been great, we've been trying to do some role-play with members, helping them to practice just like we practice every morning. and we taught a great family, the d's, the plan of salvation using pillows haha. they have 3 little****, i think 9 6 and 2? something like that. so we set out pillows and i stood with the 3 **** on each one and we talked about pre-earth life and who we lived with, earth life & why we're here, the spirit world, then the celestial kingdom! "think of the happiest you've ever been" "my baptism!" says b, the 9 year old :) ***s really bright, knew all the answers, so great :) then we took away all the pillows except for "earth life" and talked about how so many people don't have all the 'pillows'! they don't know anything except earth life. so how can we help them know the whole picture? "give them a Book of Mormon!" says B. so we gave  a copy & let  practice giving it to someone. "This is a Book of Mormon. I would like you to have it." & it really is that simple!! & then  dad asked her to pick a favourite verse so  could make it more personal, which i thought was a great idea. *** likes 2 nephi 2:25 :) anyways that was really fun. :)

.

wow wait WHAT julia went to new beginnings??!?!?!?!?!? WHAT THE WHAT THE WHAT. our new beginnings is this wednesday, the whole ward is invited so we're trying to get sister h a ride! :) so cool. & Sister D came to church yesterday!! even though S was sick so she had the perfect excuse not to come!! she really wanted to be there and so she made it happen. :) :) & church was ALL about families, so she asked us "what's family home evening?" so we're having home evening with her family tonight! hooray! :) :) so so fun.

haha i love bro night! fun, was the Hobbit good?  that is nice of BYU friends to pick him up. so hard to say goodbye!! but it's good. it's where we need to be. NATHAN - be sure to write in your journal how you know this is where you need to be & when. satan likes to make you doubt that! don't you let him :)

i'm glad the kringle was good!!! i was really really worried about it hahaha. & feel free to look through those things if you want, they don't do me any good in storage haha so you can just have them :) i'm glad you liked the kringle! packages are just really fun i think :) a little piece of wisconsin in your home! sent with tons and tons of love!! hey cool that nathan got to talk to j about that stuff. missions are awesome and they are unique! for a reason i think :) Br R - so funny haha - the more he learns about missionaries the more he's like, "Wow. Double wow!" like that we pay our own way and we don't go to school for this stuff haha. it's fun :) yeah yeah sealings!! that seriously has had probably the GREATEST impact on me, of everything that we did in the temple. probably the greatest was proxy sealings to you & dad. that's why i'm out here!! & i'm SO SO SO SO grateful that our family is together forever! what love Heavenly Father has for us! ps -- watch the new mormon message "earthly father, heavenly father" -- so so good :) & hooray for a baptism! so nice of you all to fast for us, it means a lot :) you are the best best best! the scriptures are wonderful! preach my gospel is the greatest! aaaaah what love our Heavenly Father has for us :) :) :) i do love being a missionary, and Elder Holland is great :) hooray for Apostles!! you're right mom -- why would we want to go back?? Go forwards and not backwards. Courage, brethren, and on! on to the victory!! :) :)

xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox

- seriously. you have no idea how much these people LOVE the green bay packers. sometimes i play a game called "how many people in this room are wearing packers gear" and when we went to culvers once it was 5. and this wasn't even on a game day! haha. packers & cheese, packers & cheese, i'm a little wisconsinite who loves packers and cheeeeeeseee! ;) ! that's cool you went to a church. i feel the same way when i go to other churchs - it's great but i just feel like stuff is MISSING. i love it and i definitely feel the Spirit, i just wish they had ALL of it, ya know? thank goodness for the Restoration! & what's SO COOL about the Restoration is it's Jesus Christ restoring the Way for ALL of us to have FULL access to His Atonement. Think about it -- during the great apostasy, NO ONE was taking full advantage of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ!!!!! can you imagine???? just think about how incredible that makes the first vision -- AT LAST Jesus Christ was able to restore the FULLNESS of His Gospel so that we could take FULL advantage of His Atonement!!!! it's all about getting closer to Him :) aaaah so good. :) :)

i LOVE the new youth curriculum and i'm glad you do too!! i'm kinda jealous haha!! it's so so awesome. definitely, God promises us over & over that if we open our mouths they will be filled! we just gotta use our AGENCY and show FAITH so that He can bless us! :) :) you can do it!!

also i LOVE that scene from Lion King!! what a great insight!! love love love it. also this http://www.mormonchannel.org/video/mormon-messages?v=2119328537001 mormon message is super super great, methinks :) hahaha you're just going crazy with the Lion King analogy!! i love it!! ps -- i had to stop myself from being like "THIS IS JUST LIKE LOTR" one time when we were reading the Book of Mormon with a less-active sister :) (alma 46)

also, definitely yes God can reach us ANYWHERE and EVERYWHERE :) hooray, infinite Atonement!!! :) :) love it.

anyways i love you! i'm glad you like my letters haha. YOU da best! love love -- xoxoxox

nathan - how did your talk go? send me your notes! :)

i loved the hymns too!! even though i had to conduct and i can't sing very high!! hahaha but aren't they SO so great?? what a happy day of joy and gladness :) :) also one time sister casdorph and i decided to sing our hymn of the day as low as we could ("love at home") and we barely made it through we were laughing so hard hahaha. so basically, that's the fun life of a missionary hahah ;) i am loving Wisconsin! and here's the next letter you wanted haha ;) ps i'm glad you're excited for the raspberry kringle! i hope you like it! we had pecan kringle and apple kringle for Christmas (they're HUGE here... like super huge. what?? i'd never even heard of them!! haha) but i didn't think you'd like those kinds. and at the baptism we had cinnamon roll kringle! but i didn't even know that kind existed when i went to the bakery haha. anyways i hope you enjoy it!! let me know! and just lie if you don't! haha just kidding ;) if i could send you all some frozen custard i would!! YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM. :) :) ps -- if you ever get to go to culvers (i think there's one in utah??) GO and get a kids meal and then send me your scoopie token. i'm collecting them to win a free scoop of custard ;) haha well anyways. i love you! :)

yeah it is pretty cold here haha. below 0 is funny, you go outside and you're like psshh it's not that cold, i'm fine..... then about 20 seconds later everything is numb and you have a brain freeze just from breathing in the air hahahaha. but it's warm now! well like 20 degrees ;) haha. it goes back and forth, below 0 and then above, which gets pretty crazy. that sounds super cool about the trees dripping! wow :) i'm glad you liked the kringle!!! i'm glad it made it to you safely hahaha. i'll send you another one when i can even though it costs like $20 to ship stuff haha it's worth it ;) haha i know my letters are sooooooOOOOOOOO long!! i can't help it!! oh well haha. i love love love you!!!!!!! you the bestest :) :) xoxoxoxoxo

oh whoops i forgot to say MY stuff! haha whoopsie. well i already said a lot of it in the replies but here's my Book of Mormon sharing contribution!

1 Ne 15:14 - so basically for a while now i've been kind of frustrated with the phrase "come unto Christ," like we all know we're supposed to do it but HOW??? it's not like i can just get on a plane to albuqurque and "come unto Him" in that way! if i could, i would. but that's not the way. so what IS the way we "Come unto Christ?" WELL shocker shocker, it's in the Book of Mormon. live the gospel!!!! & what is the gospel??? faith. repentance. baptism. recieveing the gift of the Holy Ghost. enduring to the end!!! ahh so so good. so basically the point of the Book of Mormon is so that people everywhere can "know and dcome... to the eknowledge of the gospel of their Redeemer... and the very points of his doctrine, that they may know how to come unto him and be saved." !!!!!!!! so basically, everyone should read the Book of Mormon. amen, the end. :) :)

1 Ne 13:36 / 3 Ne 11:39 / Hel 5:21 -- How do we build upon the Rock?

What is the gospel? (PMG ch 1!)

PMG page 2. last paragraph. uh, WHAT? so so so so good!!!!! how did i never see this before. what the what the what. read it. love it. live it. also, the first sentence on page 6. seriously, how has preach my gospel been around for like 8 years and i'm JUST NOW seeing all this great stuff????? what what WHAT have i been doing with my life!! :) :)

THE RESTORATION OF THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST. basically, what happened is this. Jesus Christ came and taught His perfect Gospel & performed His perfect Atonement. [the gospel = the doctrine of Christ = the way we access the Atonement.] then, we lost it. priesthood athority, lost. true doctrines & principles? warped. & without authority, ordinances & covenants? gone. :( :( so during this great apostasy, NO ONE was taking full advantage of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. no one. !!!!!!!!!! what the!!!!! can you even imagine how Jesus Christ felt? people still knew truths, and they still wanted to live His Gospel, but the fullness was NOT upon the earth!! (amos 8:11-12) what darkness :( this went on for 1800 years!! enter joseph smith. a 14 year old boy with a question, and faith, and a prayer. in a little grove of trees in upstate New York. through him, Jesus Chirst restored the FULLNESS of His Gospel so that we could have FULL access to His Atonement!! He wants us to be even closer to Him ("just a closer walk with Thee"). He wants us to use His Atonement every single day. don't let Christ's sacrifice go to waste! use the Atonement every day. exercise faith. repent (change). make & keep sacred covenants. live worthy of the Holy Ghost. Come to know Him more through studying His sacred Word :) :) how. seriously. awesome. :) :) :) :) :) it's hard to explain over email haha but you can just imagine that with lots of hand gestures & yelling ;) that's how i do missionary work! hahaha.

also, i dare you to spend ONE day driving exactly the speed limit. i dare you. and then tell me what gospel lessons we can learn from that haha. seriously. do it and then tell me :)

ps i think i do want one of those little PMGs, if you can send one to me? :) also..... music. GOOD music haha. is there a way for you to send me my efy cd or something? we listen to cds in the car and ipods in the apartment. we only have 1 good cd, and it is pretty good ("nearer," from shadow mountain) but it's the only one we have hahaha. HEY one of the Zone Leaders just handed me the efy 2013 cd!! awesome!! :) :)

funnies:

sister casdorph introducing me as her new "partner" hahahahaha

someone at the thrift stop saying (loudly): "i don't say it "potpourri," i say "POT UH PURRY"!" hahahah ohhh wisconsinites.... :)

ANYWAYS. i love you all so much!!!!!!!!!!! big huggggg, little kiiiiiiiisss :) :)

xoxoxoxoxoxox

sister cece :) :)

xox

also i did the math and there are about as many days in my mission as there are pages in the Book of Mormon. i'm in the "2nd nephi 9" of my mission ;)

23 January 2013 hello family!!!

hello! it was wonderful to get your letter! i got one hard copy a few days ago and i just read your email, hurrah :) also, lds.org has some AWESOME stuff on it these days. i really love the new youth curriculum, i think i would be going crazy with it if i was still home and had the free time haha ;) & mom i love how you're modeling your primary lessons after it. you're so great! :) :) [also, logistics-wise.... can you take down my racine address? it's easier if people just write to the mission one (in case i get transferred) and i realize it might not be best to have my living address on the internet. just to be safe :)]

SO scriptures for this week. well first of all, we had Zone Conference yesterday! which was really really great. we got to ride in the "fun bus" up to the north milwaukee stake center, about an hour and a half with a bunch of missionaries and a figurine of ammon wearing a sombrero haha so you can imagine that was great :) and zone conference was really really great. i'll write more about that later. i'm not sure why i said "first things first" haha it's like the most recent thing. ANYWAYS. some great scriptures:

1 Peter 4:12-16 - life is going to be hard, it might as well be hard for the right reasons haha

Alma 17:31/matt 10:6/John 10:11/John4:10,13-14. "My brethren, be of good cheer and let us go in search of the flocks, and we will gather them together and bring them back unto the place of water; and thus we will preserve the flocks unto the King"

:) sometimes 100+ square miles of scattered flock can be pretty overwhelming. we drive around and i see all these people and they ALL need the gospel!!!!! but this verse gives me comfort. i wrote it on our whiteboard :) "the place of water" can be baptism / the Living Water (Jesus Christ), which is a cool symbol for baptism anyways!! come and be completely immersed in the Living Waters, your Savior Jesus Christ and His Atonement!! :) :) and thus we will preserve the flocks unto the King :) and Jesus taught that there should be one fold, and one Shepherd (He is the Good Shepherd). we get to be part of that! :)

Enos 1:4 & Ether 6:9. one phrase in both of those scriptures - "and when the night came." :)

oh here's a fun bus story. so basically br j** j*** says "the bible and the book of mormon tell the same gospel right?" "right!" "okay so i'll just read the bible." "wait........ uh.............." basically he thinks the bible is like a john denver cd and the book of mormon is like bonus tracks. they're great but you don't need them to know john denver was a great singer. uh................... no. so on the fun bus i asked one of the zone leaders what he thought and he reminded me that BESIDES testifying of Christ, the Book of Mormon is the convincing evidence that the message of the Restoration is true. it does double duty :) :) which i knew, but i forgot! so hooray for zone leaders and riding the fun bus! haha :)

when you invite the missionaries over for dinner, help them fulfill their purpose! ask them about the work and how you can help :) and if you can't think of any friends who are ready to meet with the missionaries right now, well the missionaries go out every day and meet people that you can become friends with! haha. we talked at zone conference about how to help members who say "all my friends are already members" and inviting them to make new friends hahaha

OKAY this is so cute. so basically Brother R***’s LOVES the Gospel and cannot wait to be baptized. and the other day when we were talking about it he got this big old grin on his face and even DID A HAPPY OLD MAN BAPTISM DANCE. he just scooted around in his chair a bit and lifted his hands in the air... shoot. i wish you guys could've seen it hahaha it was the cutest old man dance ever yay baptism!! :) :) he's SO happy to be baptized. LOVES the gospel. :) :) :)

also - people here found out i love peppermint and keep giving me candy canes hahaha so nice :) :)

Sister D**** finished the Book of Mormon in 6 weeks!! with two young kids and a full-time job!! we've had some really great lessons about likening the scriptures and she's coming to church next week! hooray!

okay THIS is cool. we read with Sister D*** in Ether 2 & 3 about the shiny rocks and how we take our best idea to the Lord and He makes it work, which i think she really connected with, and then at the next lesson we read from Ether 2:6-7, 13-14, 16-17 about how we've crossed "many waters" but we can't stop now - God has bigger plans for us! He wants us to make it to the promised land! so don't get comfortable and camp for 4 years at the edge of a great sea! yes it is scary but the Lord will lead us, as He's always done. so go to work and build your barge! and Sister D says, "i'll bring the rocks" :) :) :) i loved it!! she's really connecting with the scriptures and her faith is increasing!!

{ which reminds me -- PMG ch 1. so good. especially page 2 and page 6. read it read it read it! :) :) also it makes me happy you're doing the little schedule thing. i definitely want to hear what you're learning & what goals you're setting!! also read the missionary handbook. the stuff on missionary leadership is especially good :)}

AND THEN yesterday at Zone Conference Sister J*** shared that exact story from Ether 2!!! also chapter 6, which is so good!!! it was really really cool. "coincidence? i think NOT!" :) zion - one heart & one mind. (who's heart & mind? the Savior's!) when we're all united with the Savior & teaching by the Spirit, "coincidences" happen :) anyways it was a really great lesson & i learned (again) that these barges were basically football-shaped and you can't really steer those. so the Jaredites did all they could to prepare and then "commended themselves to the Lord." also how the furious wind and all that is sent from the Lord and never ceases to move them closer to the Promised Land!! also, I bet they were really grateful for their EXACT obedience in building those barges when they were so deep underwater. if they hadn't been EXACTLY obedient and had just been like "eh that's good enough" when they were following the Lord's commandments on how to build their barges..... well, just read Ether 6:7. :) and pay attention to the word "THEREFORE" :) :) so so good!! anyways i just love that story. Ether 6. super great.

ALSO mom, speaking of "going to the rescue," i was thinking the other night as we were driving around seeking out those "lost sheep" and inviting them IN PERSON to come back to church how unique that is. i don't know of anyone else who goes out and knocks on people's doors and says we want you to come back. and gas is expensive! our car is expensive! our food, housing, etc - it's expensive! it's worth it to the Lord. He wants His children, His sheep, to come back into the fold. and so we don't make phone calls. we don't even send letters. we go out, in person, in below-freezing weather, and we bring His children Home. amen, the end. to the rescue!! just like the pioneers. that was my favourite part of 17 miracles when we watched it in the MTC. that and realizing that the reason they did all that was to have the blessings of the temple. and now we get to go take the blessings of the temple to all the world!! :) :) speaking of which -- Nathan. GO AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN. i'm seriously dying to get back to the temple & we can only go every 6 months here. go go go go go!!! & go with mom & dad while you can :) :) so so great. love it. :)

so basically i love being a representative of Jesus Christ and getting to make promises to people in His name prompted by His Spirit. and it's totally real. we invite people to make changes (ie to repent), then when they commit to do it we promise them blessings. and it's not scripted at all. and we were teaching a less-active Sister the other night and i promised her that if she would be faithful in reading the Book of Mormon daily, her family would be blessed. and you can just feel the Spirit confirm the truth of what you're saying and it's so so so so cool i just love it :) :) :) power & authority! (alma 17:3)

SPEAKING OF ALMA 17:3. so i think i told you a while back how Sister Casdorph pointed out in District Meeting that it says "they had given themselves" and we talked about how it means total consecration? so yesterday at zone conference we watched a talk from Elder Holland given at the MTC a while back that was basically a longer version of his talk "the first great commandment" from last conference. YEAH. so so so so good. if there's any way for you to get a copy of that, get it. but i don't know what it's called or anything. i just know it was like his conference talk, BUT MORE. AH. so basically, re-read that talk. Elder Holland was talking about when Jesus Christ asked Peter "lovest thou me more than these?" and he was essentially asking him, "do you love me more than these? more than what you do? more even than who you are?" "Yea Lord, I do love Thee." and THAT was the moment Peter became the Great Apostle. when we decide that we love Jesus Christ and are committed to following Him and serving Him and loving Him even more than we love ourselves, then we become truly converted unto the Lord. then He can use us as instruments in His Hands. !!!!!!!!! "you need to decide TONIGHT whether you're on a course committed to your love for God." basically MTC devotionals are the greatest because they hold nothing back :) :) :) "YOU CANNOT GO BACK [to your old life.] it's over. this mission marks the end of an old life and the beginning of a new. & it's never ever ever over. You've left your nets, and you're going to feed sheep." !!!!!! :) :) it was so great. i think i'd been kind of subconsciously still thinking about when i go back home, but if i go back home then what was even the point of coming out? ("go forward and not backward!" d&c 128:22) that old life is over. i'm committed to moving forward and following Jesus forever. :) :) hooray for being a missionary!! hymn 270 verse 3.

okay and here's a great story. so basically, once you understand the gospel & the doctrine of Christ you know why we invite people to be baptized in the first lesson. it just makes sense, like why would you not. so we've invited Sister H**** to be baptized a few times but she's SUPER afraid & unwilling to commit and afraid of belonging and wants to "diversify" and find out everything about every church and basically was just dragging her feet. also i'm using the word basically a lot, don't know why. sorry haha. anyways so we planned to invite her to be baptized on a specific date. even though she still didn't want to commit to baptism haha. so we get in there and are teaching the lesson, and read 2 Ne 31:10-11 with her and she starts CRYING. and we ask what she's feeling and she says she knows she needs to repent and she wants to repent (she's been through a LOT) and we bring up baptism and all her fears come up and i'm thinking "okay, we mentioned baptism, but she's clearly not ready to commit to a date so lets just go" but Sister Casdorph (!!!) invites her to be baptized on Feb 23rd. and she says no i can't do that i can't be baptized for at least a year i've got all these chemical dependencies & addictions to work out first, but Sister Casdorph says we know she can be ready and that God will help her. Sister H says what about March 23rd and we say great, will you pray about it? right now, right here, with us? and when you find out that this is true and that God wants you to follow Jesus Christ and be baptized, will you do that? and Sister H says yes so we all kneel down and she says "dear Heavenly Father" then stops and says "i can't pray." and i'm like shoot. satan is stopping this prayer from happening. but then i look up and she just has tears running down her face and she keeps praying and asks if she can be baptized March 23rd and says how much she wants to follow Jesus and make her life right and she'll even be baptized February 23rd if that's what He wants. and she closes in the name of Jesus Christ and then says "that's my answer. i feel Unity." and it was AWESOME. and what if sister casdorph hadn't been bold in inviting her to be baptized on a specific date? and what if we hadn't prayed with her right then right there?? SO SO AWESOME :) :) :) SO she came to church on Sunday and cried during Sacrament Meeting because she felt the Spirit tell her again that what she was doing what right, cried during Gospel Principles (lesson on families) because she knows she needs to be there for her mom (only member in the family) and she's committed to that, AND THEN GUESS WHAT THE RELIEF SOCIETY LESSON WAS ON OH JUST BAPTISM YEAH THAT'S A COINCIDENCE. so so so amazing!!! great great day at church. wonderful wonderful wonderful spirit :) :)

oh and HAHA guess who the gospel principles' teachers were - us! haha the regular teachers' kid was sick so we found out as class was starting that we'd be teaching. BUT GUESS WHAT THE SPIRIT IS AWESOME BECAUSE GOD LOVES HIS CHILDREN SO HE HELPS US TO KNOW WHAT TO TEACH OBVIOUSLY AWESOME. :))))))))))))))))) so so good!!!

SO basically it was a really great week. OH it is cold. how cold? well.

apparently milk can freeze if you leave it outside over night.

our store of water we keep in the car is frozen.

i got a paper towel wet to wipe down the mats in the car today and the paper towel froze. (this was all inside the garage)

we went to culvers (yum custard!) and i got some piping hot wisconsin cheese curds, then right after we got gas and i took my hot melty cheese curds out with me to pump the gas and when i got back into the car i popped one in my mouth and it was no longer melty hahaha. SO COLD!!

BUT we are surviving just fine so no need to worry about us at all, uncle josh sent me a great hat and gramma some great finger-less gloves from north dakota and we have our warm car that we keep full of gas and we bring extra blankets etc etc so we're great :) and we just layer up!! and try not to freeze! haha it's awesome :) "it's the penguin's Christmas skating party!" {muppet's Christmas carol} is what i say to myself every day as we slip and slide around on the ice in our long black coats hahaha :) :)

 also frozen jello is weird.

also, something that is great to do is to sing hymns or recite scriptures while you're waiting on the doorstep for someone to answer. it boosts your morale and lets you know when enough time has passed so you can knock again haha. i like to use "the standard of truth." ;) ;)

so here's the thing - missionary work is GOD'S work. the salvation of His children is His work and His glory. so i'm not sure why I'm ever surprised when He gets involved hahaha this is His thing! it's what He spends 100% of His time doing. what an honor that we get to participate in that :) :) :)

you know that scene from Aladdin where Aladdin is underwater and the Genie comes out of the lamp and is like "i can't help you unless you wish for it!!" but then like fanagles everything to make it so that he can help Aladdin? not to be irreverent but I think that's how God works with us sometimes. we're just trying our best & messing things up but He loves us so much He makes the best out of our best efforts :) :) hooray, God!! :) :)

also, modern-day prophets are a real thing. living apostles? yep. real. :) :)

something i've been trying to find the balance in is being on time to appointments and not wasting time [sometimes people tell us REALLY long irrelevant stories, or go off on huge tangents], and what President Uchtdorf said last conference -

"I think of our Lord and Exemplar, Jesus Christ, and His short life among the people of Galilee and Jerusalem. I have tried to imagine Him bustling between meetings or multitasking to get a list of urgent things accomplished. I can’t see it. Instead I see the compassionate and caring Son of God purposefully living each day. When He interacted with those around Him, they felt important and loved. He knew the infinite value of the people He met. He blessed them, ministered to them. He lifted them up, healed them. He gave them the precious gift of His time."

:) that Jesus. I just love Him :)

also back to Sister H - she did that thing where you flip open the Bible and point, and she said every single time she did it she landed on the same verse, one about not eating at the Lord's table and the devil's table - you've got to choose. and that really impacted her. believe it or not i'd never heard of that verse hahaha but i looked it up and it's 1 Cor 10:21. so now you all are smarter than i was :)

the stars here are AMAZINGLY bright. Ps. 147:4 :)

Brother Rs has changed his facebook religion and KNOWS that there are living prophets and apostles and that Joseph Smith was a prophet. "positive. period. end of sentence. i declare it!" :) :) :) :) love love love it. also guess what hymns he picked for his baptism? "on this day of joy and gladness" and "the happy day at last has come" :) :) :) doesn't that just make your heart happy????? :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

 nathan - read d&c 88:73-81. also d&c 31:3. :)

we're getting 23 new missionaries next transfer!!!!!! aaaaaahhh!!! THE LORD IS HASTENING HIS WORK.

 dear family, i love you all so very much. your examples mean more and more to me every day, and you're influencing people here that you've never even heard of or met. you are amazing!!! i'm so grateful that families are forever :) :) i pray for you every single prayer :) {and that's a LOT!!! hahaha}

oh and SPEAKING of "ring out wild bells" hahaha it's one of the Assistant's favourites!!! so he asked me to play it at a new missionary training meeting and i was like you've GOT to be kidding me hahaha and i told him i thought that was a weird song and he was like yeah President Jones thinks so too, i guess Elder Haertel got to pick the song for a meeting with President once and he picked that song was President was like "I don't even know what that song is in the hymn book" hahahahahaha :) :) :) :) :)

greetings from your favourite friendly snow angel!!

greetings from your favourite friendly snow angel!!

i feel like a penguin today sliding on all the ice haha it's pretty fun :)

WELL what a week. i got two letters from you this week i think! i'm glad to hear the boys are tearing it up in wrestling, way to go :) and you asked what we do on p-day... well we wake up at the same time and do exercise until 7:30, then breakfast/shower/etc until 8:30, then personal study till 9:30, companion study till 10:30, cleaning (we clean the bathroom & our bedroom every week, and we vacuum the car every week) till about 11:30, then we eat lunch and then drive over to the library to email, then around 2pm we head to Walmart to do our grocery shopping, we get a car wash and gas, then we go home and write letters or whatever, eat dinner, then at 6pm we're back in missionary mode :) so not too exciting but very nice :)

so the B’s took their Christmas stuff down yesterday and there are only a few houses left now with Christmas lights up... too funny. i really do love it though haha.

[also side-note: can you edit out the names when you post letters online? i want you all to know the names but we're not supposed to post them, especially last names, on the internet. and no personal details or identifying anything blablablah. you can just use initials maybe? whatever you think is best. thanks] :) :)

BROTHER R. so golden. we've had pretty good daily contact with him, either texting, having a lesson, stopping by to see him, or having a member friend call and check up on him. :) he just loves the gospel and it all makes sense to him, "i always knew I lived with God before I was born" and all that :) :) and he was in radio for like 47 years so he has a talk radio voice which makes EVERYTHING awesome hahah. we've had such great support from the members and it's really been amazing for us, for them, and for br r :) he's on track to be baptized in less than two weeks! and he just can't wait! one of the things i love about teaching & testifying of the gospel truths is that it strengthens MY testimony so much and I learn every time. early in the week we went over to teach about the Restoration, and we were sitting at a round table in the dining area of his apartment complexy place. so i was sitting kind of next to him and testifying about the First Vision and how I KNOW God loves His children and i KNOW that He answers prayers. and he just is looking me in the eye and nodding and says "i know," and it's really cool. then a couple days later we're having a lesson at the M's (WMLs) home about the Plan of Salvation, but first Br R asked if he could say a few things... his lessons are so funny because we don't even have to ask him how reading is going or follow up on commitments, he does it before we can even ask haha. also he LOVES the Book of Mormon and he thinks Laman & Lemuel are "whiney complainers" haha. and he really relates to Nephi being asked to do hard things because God asked him to and all that. but anyways, sister casdorph had asked him to journal about some of the spiritual experiences he was having so he'd brought his journal and asked if he could read some of it to us. and towards the end he was talking about our last lesson and he looks at me and goes "this is for you Sister Proffit" and talks about how when we were talking that night, he could see in my eyes that I knew what we were talking about was true. and it had a huge effect on him i guess. i dunno, that feels weird to talk about and it's hard to explain but it was really cool that he could SEE my testimony and my faith, and it helped him? i don't know. it's hard to explain haha. but anyways it just made me grateful to know and to KNOW that i know, and for him to be able to see that :) that probably doesn't make sense haha oh well. it was just cool :) and talking about the Plan of Salvation is my favourite because you can really feel the truth of it and know how much God loves us and how much He trusts us and wants to help us make the right choices and repent every day and become better. What infinite potential He sees in each of us!!! what love He has always had for us and continues to feel for each of us. what a great plan!! what a wonderful Gospel :) :)

speaking of preach my gospel!!!!! (kind of...) okay i think i have a complex/disease where i just have to plan things for people. but you obviously don't have to do this and i'm not the boss of you and it's your thing. but i was thinking, new missionaries have a 12 week program we work out of where we read pretty much all of preach my gospel and learn great stuff and practice the 8 fundamentals, and it occurred to me that 12 weeks would translate really well into 12 months if anyone wanted to get a great study of PMG in the new year. so obviously you do not have to do this, but i made up a schedule based on the 12 week program if you want it. because i have a disease that compels me to do things like this haha. SO it goes like this. but just take it for what it is :)

each month - pick a Christlike attribute from ch. 6 to work on

jan - ch 2, missionary handbook

feb - "The Restoration" (ch 3 lesson 1), "How to Begin Teaching" (ch 10 p176-177) - seriously learn those HBT points and use them!! in talks, whatever. learn em :) so good

mar - ch 9, ch 7, "teach people not lessons" (ch 10)

apr - "The Plan of Salvation" (ch 3 lesson 2), ch 13

may - ch 8

jun - "The Gospel of Jesus Christ" (ch 3 lesson 3), "revelation through prayer"

jul - ch 5, "revelation through the Book of Mormon"

aug - "The Commandments" (ch 3 lesson 4), ch 11

sep - ch 12, "we invite they commit we follow up"

oct - "laws and ordinances" (ch 3 lesson 5), "role of the Holy Ghost" (ch 4), "revelation through church"

nov - ch 10

dec - ch 1, "the doctrine of Christ - the missionary purpose"

:) so feel free to use that if you like and obviously adapt it to meet needs because that's what we do too :)

also the CES devotional last night was so so good!!!!!!! and SO on point. it's like President Uchtdorf is an apostle or something ;) we watched it with A at her house, which was great. actually it was SO great because saturday night we went over to teach prayer & family prayer, and we read from Moroni 10:4.

speaking of moroni 10 - study verses 3-5. why is verse 3 there? what's important about what Moroni is asking us in that verse? how does that set up for verse 4? how can we help others to do that? what is the difference between "read" and "receive"? what can we learn from those verses? SO so good.

so anyways we were focusing on verse 4 that night and on the three key things that make our prayers effective (spoiler alert, you should look up that verse now so i don't ruin it for you ;) ) sincere heart, real intent, and faith in Christ. so we talked about what all of those mean. what do you think they mean? something that i've learned about "real intent" from PMG is that real intent means REALly INTENding to act on the answers we receive! so true. so we asked her which two she felt she was strongest in (sincerity and faith) and which one she could work on (real intent.) and then we invited her to pray to pray with more real intent, which made her laugh haha but she said she would :) and we invited the whole family to have nightly family prayer (3 ne 18:19-21)

which of the 3 do you feel you're strongest in? which one could you improve? i know that those 3 things are the key to having effective prayer :) also there's a section on prayer in PMG ch 4, and also ch 3 lesson 4, that is really good :) i like the scale it gives to evaluate your prayers, and how "do not recognize answers" and "confident that God answers prayers" are opposites :)

Br J (a's boyfriend) has been pulling away recently, which is dumb. he says he knows the Book of Mormon is good, but if it's basically the same stuff as the Bible, the same gospel and all that, he's just going to stick with the Bible. "some people play keyboard, some drum, some both, but it's all the same music. i think i'm just going to stick with the keyboard for now." arrrrrghhhhh hahaha. not sure how to really respond to that. he's very COMFORTABLE with where he's at, which makes things hard. he has no desire to change, not even to ask God for anything. he's good with where he's at. which is prideful. everything bad comes back to pride haha. but anyways. we're working on that. he still lets us come over, he just doesn't participate as much any more. :( sad face.

oh also we got to meet a woman named K! I think i told you about how we tracted into her in december and i didn't want to get out of the car cause the house was dark, but we did? and then she texted us to reschedule? well we got to go over to her house and teach her on tuesday, and she's great. she had some great questions about baptism and where we go after we die, and she said she'd invite us back to teach more! and when she prayed at the end she prayed that God would help her to learn more and receive more truth. and she's reading from the Book of Mormon which is great :)

speaking of the Book of Mormon, Luke Proffit sent me the GREATEST letter last week haha i LOVED it. he said "i have some goals for you for your mission... bring 10 people into the gospel, give away 15 books of mormons, and at the end of your mission, find your true love" with a big heart around "true love" hahaha. i loved it!! he's such a sweet kid, i loved getting a letter from him :) and thanks to all the family and ward family members who sent me mail over the holidays!!! i so appreciated it :) :) Braden even said he missed me at Sunday dinners haha that made me smile :)

speaking of the Book of Mormon, guess who else is reading it! L S! she is a wonderful lady who is really an honest seeker of truth. sister casdorph had had a few lessons with her before i came, then lost contact over the holidays so we kept having to go back and she kept not being home and i was like okayyy clearly we should move on now but we didn't and we went back "one more time" and she was outside plugging in her lights!! and she let us in!! and she's been reading from the Book of Mormon a little bit each day since she last met with missionaries back before i came! she said she felt like it portrayed an angry God, which isn't what she believes in since she knows God is loving, so we tried to resolve that concern. i was just impressed that she kept reading haha. she doesn't like the idea of God cursing and smiting people. how would you respond to that? :) i'm interested to hear your thoughts. and then i'll tell you what we're teaching :) i never thought the Book of Mormon portrayed God as angry! so that was surprising to hear. so there's a scenario for you. let me know what you think, how you would respond :)

I'M SO EXCITED FOR YOU ALL TO BECOME MISSIONARIES. especially the full-time variety :) Nathan - about preparedness. I'll probably send you a whole letter full of unsolicited advice because that's my disease, but for now I'd just say focus on attributes over skills. skills will come over time just from doing missionary work a lot. but attributes must be carefully and diligently developed and lived. focus on who you are, not what you say, because who you are will have a much more powerful effect. i think you all are amazing, you've been developing those Christlike attributes all your life and that's what makes the largest difference. also -- D&C 31:3. :)

i'm giving a talk on Sunday! hahaha. which is actually cool because i got to invite L to come! and she actually might! even though she's afraid of church and has an idea of it being all "sinners in the hands of an angry god" nonsense. also i'm going to invite K b/c the gospel principles lesson is on families and she loves her family :) :) i'm speaking on how we gain a testimony. i'll send you my notes next week :) speaking of which, next p-day is wednesday the 23rd because the 21st (monday) is a holiday which means we get to do missionary work all day! haha.

brother m, the ward mission leader, used to look like count dukuu (sp?). i saw a picture. he and his wife used to be hardcore bikers, like devils angels, smoking 3 packs a day drunks. crazy!!!!!!!! you'd never know it now haha they're the greatest. gramma proffit would really like them i think :)

also -- we went to visit a less-active sister whose (active) sister just passed away. she told us - and i felt the Spirit so strong as she was saying this - "i know what i need to do now. I need to come back to church. I need to be fully active in the gospel. I want to be where she is, I want to be together forever." crazy that it took something like this to get her to wake up to the gospel, but so amazing!! i know it brings her sister joy. read Alma 13:24 and tell me who you think those angels are :)

also, people have no idea who i am, and it doesn't matter. I'm a Missionary, so I represent the Lord. it's a crazy thought. a crazy way to live. :)

also look at 3 ne 11 and see what the first things the Savior teaches are. why do you think that is? how could that help somebody?

also we have another baptism schedule! brother y his wife & step-daughter are members. he's had a few baptismal dates before, since over a year ago, but they've always been pushed back and pushed back so he just gave up. but this time it's going to happen! and this time it's going to be a lifestyle change. he's not quitting smoking cold turkey, he's doing it right this time, and he's doing it for himself, not because he feels pressured. hooray for repentance and change!! seriously the greatest :) :)

"like" is pronounced "lake" by some people here. also lots of southern accents, which i love :) :)

aaaaaaand that's about it for this week i think!! another great, great week. i hope life's been wonderful for you!!!!! I love hearing about your lives :) i'm sad your emails got deleted twice! haha but that happens. i look forward to your letters each week, they're the light of my life :)

i love you all!! the gospel is true!!! FAMILIES CAN BE TOGETHER FOREVER, huzzah!!!!!!!!!!!

love love love

biiiig huggggg, liiiiiittle kiiiiiiiisssss

xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxxxx :) :) :)

sister cece :) :)

can you believe i've been out for 6 weeks?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm here at least another 6, and then who knows where. ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! :) :) :) :)

also i hope you all watch the CES devotional!! & tell me what stands out :) :)

OH I FORGOT TO SAY. the whole point of talking about A & the devotional & Moroni 10:4 is that we read it saturday with her. and then sunday we texted her about coming with a question in mind to watch the devotional and listening to the Spirit to receive revelation. and President Uchtdorf totally quoted Moroni 10:4!! and afterwards we were debriefing and she was like "yeah it's funny cause we were just talking about that last night!" and how she didn't get a direct answer but it's too much to have been a coincidence that President Uchtdorf used the same scripture and talked about the same thing!!! she totally got an answer and she even recognized it!!!!! i love it :) :) :) also she LOVES President Uchtdorf haha she thinks he has such a way with words and she says "he rocks, and if he showed up on my door i would totally let him in" and she wants to wallpaper her house with his quotes :) :) hooraaaaaaaaaay, apostles!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) :)

the Church is true!!!!!!!!! :) :)

love love love
